The modern Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) was established at Stratford-on-Avon in 1961 under the artistic directorship of Peter Hall. Hall committed the company to a repertoire of classical, modern and new works. In 1962 the RSC established a London home at the Aldwych Theatre, and initiated the continuing practice of touring at home and abroad. In 1982 the RSC moved its London base to the Barbican Theatre. The RSC staged spectacular and popularly acclaimed musical productions during the 1980s and 1990s, including Les Misérables. The ambition of the current artistic director, Adrian Noble, is to make the RSC ‘the best classical theatre company in the English-speaking world’.
